Ya Materials is a big issue. I used super glue to bond a coil and it melted the coating and the coil shorted out!

It seems to take at lease 6 months for an epoxied coil to settle down to a stable state.

I filled one coil with epoxy and it's too heavy!

This is my latest attempt at a coil for Pickini. I'm not sure what to fill it with to keep the windings from moving
but not make it too heavy or slow?

I used a knitting hoop with a wire loom hose to make a small light hoop setup...

if you can cut wood plates the it is only a smal step to vacuum forming coil shells

My early plywood coils I set the windings with PVA glue. It worked ok, but took a while to dry, and you will make no sense of the detector while it's wet.
My melamine plate for a Tuggle coil split in half the first time I put the hacksaw to it. Next I will try with pvc-should work.
Also going to try a spiderweb coil former made of stiff cardboard......
Another thought is a Tuggle style from 12mm ply, with a groove cut around, then slotted, with wire interwoven on 1 face 5.5mm(6mm less 1/2 hacksaw blade width).

Down the river with the dogs this arvo. Found 3 bits of lead with the Bara amongst the bottle caps. Yep, there's a definite tone difference. Coiltek 11"mono should be here tomorrow.

Polyester resin and super glue will dissolves polystyrene foam. Epoxy resin is fine with any foam.

The brown urethane foam is the only one I know that will work with polyester resin.


I have seen a blog of someone using polyester resin and polystyrene foam they sealed it with PVA glue first. Not tried it myself.

Its disolve.... even when coating with based water edge paint, doesnt have a jigsaw machine, only a table saw.

I think the epoxy/fibreglass resin will dissolve the foam? I'm sure there are other methods in the coils section here.
I use 100mm pvc stormwater pipe. Cut to length, cut down middle. Heat in oven at 180C, press flat, cut to 3/4 inch larger than mold, then press into mold. Trim edges with tin snips. Expanded packaging foam sheets for filler, and then glue/clamp top on with white silicone. Easiest to trim top to size after silicone has set for 2-7 days. Ears are epoxy glued.

Yes, the housing, the material is come yesterday, clear resin + catalyst + black dye, will try to mold it on a shaped sterofoam

I'm still working on a dual field-10x5,430uH 3 winds cat5 outer, 3 winds inner. At the moment I'm at 330 outer damping and 1K5 inner. It's working great on my Newhobby NH5 (3 inches for 1.7g flour gold), but has constant ringing on the Bara, then when I adjust the 25K delay trimmer, to allow adjustment on the 10K pot, the sensitivity is very poor...
The 10x5 press-mold for heated pvc is the only one I have made yet, but it does make a nice solid housing.

I used 450uH which is the same as the original. Anywhere around that inductance and there is no need to tweak the damping resistor.


Just one less thing I could get wrong.

I built a DD but could not get the damping right. It see's the other coil or something;

Those coils are for my GMT. (Whites Goldmaster E series)
But you can convert any PI to take a DD coil easily. Apparently there is no advantage to this, but my Surfpro board came as a DD, so I set it up that way, and the 10x5ML commander on it far exceeds any other coil. Perhaps it would also be interesting to make/test a concentric in this fashion too?
