Good advice! I don't yet have an account but will do this when it is set up.

          • Using 8" fast spider coil - First Detection Distance (not solid tone, just beeps with target passage) on 1964 silver US dime - 8 1/2", 1970 full copper penny 9 1/4", US Nickel 10 1/2". There are other beeps at greater distances but they are not consistent. I know air tests are 'dodgy' so I'd like to get a setup for buried in soil tests here at home. Also these results are at distances greater than the radius of my coil so it would be more relevant to document how the soil affects performance.

You can also use Eric's method of testing.
              Clear an area of ground
Place a 25mm wooden board on ground
              place coil on board
              wave coin over coil
gives a more realistic result than just waving in air,

WOW! This is the first time I heard of this method and it makes sense to me that it is better. I was thinking of going up into the mountains and digging a plastic storage tub of soil from my prospect area. That would be very heavy and cumbersome.

                Thanks for the tip!

This guy tests a lot of detectors this way.

                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just ran some more tests using the technique you described here earlier.

Put coil .75" off ground on bark chips. Ground was damp from rain last night. 12.8 volt supply voltage. 1060 ohm damping. 8" round fast spider coil. Guard Interval set to '10' (8 us). No Barrier.

                      1964 US silver dime - 5 3/4"

                      1970 US full copper penny - 7"

                      1994 US nickel - 8 1/4"

                      .375" square Aluminum soda can .004 thick - 4 1/2"

                      .250" square Aluminum can .004" thick - 2 3/4"

This technique definitely changes detection distances from those in air. US nickel loses 2 1/4" detection distance. I'm still not sure how it compares to buried target responses. Does anyone have a comparison?

                      Thanks,

                      Dan

Its a more realistic test, and closer to what you will get with coin in ground, given all the variables.

                        • When will the video? In this age of technological advancement, to shoot a video clip is not difficult (you can shoot video camera, cameras, telephone, iron, toaster, fridge) ... I'm wondering how the device determines the type of metal? With your refinement can be distinguished copper, silver, lead, gold, big iron?

                          Comment

                          • Just back from an extended trip and still optimizing filter responses in the 2 stage amp. The ability of CHANCE to discriminate metals is not affected by the 2 stage amp mod as long as the offset is adjusted per post #201. Once filters are optimized I will work on posting a video showing responses to copper, silver, lead, gold, & iron. I want to show VDI and give good audio in the video as those two working together give the best clues to material type.

                            Regards,

                            Dan

                              • Been wanting to do discrimination with a PI detector. Does the chance PI indicate ferrous for a nail parallel and 90 degrees to the coil? Is the indication not ferrous and the same indication for a nickel flat and on edge?
