Master Hunter ADS troubles

Guys, I've been trying to follow this thread because I' ve got the same problem(s) with two Master Hunters, the ADS Deepseeker (toggle switch), and an ADS 7. Both went bad this past weekend. Were working well, then the sound went out slowly after the initial blip over a target. If I retuned, would get a good threshold, but as soon as I hit a target, the volume would steadily decrease. Thought at first it was batteries, as the meter showed almost nil on the battery check on the ADS, but even after putting in all new batteries, 1 was full right, 2 almost nil. And like yours Gold Dredger, the meter itself goes full right when passing over a target after the sound goes out. I saw the one response with the schematics and printed the one out that looks right. However, I saw transistor NSDU45 mentioned, but the schematic shows one with the number MPSU 45. Gold Dredger, which one did you have in your machine and what replacement did you buy? Conan, did you have to replace any transistors or just the IC you mentioned? Thanks in advance guys for any help. I really need to get one of these back "on the road again."

FOUND THE CULPRIT (I.C) MC14011

Hello and welcome back homefire .I will like to thank the maker of this thread and special thanks to homefire for the schematics and Gold dredger for the amazing close up pics.Thank you guys.Because of your help I have the Deepseeker ADS working .And I have not put it together yet but the depth is amazing for the age.Like with the 7 1/2inch coil it pick up in the air text a half silver dollar about 14inches and a small light gold ring about 12 inches and in VLF full sensitivity a nine volt battery about 20 inches.I will run further checks when I mounted back together,since it has a 10 1/2 and a 14inch coils.THE CULPRIT IS BEING FOUND (I.C) MC14011 AND PUT IN JAIL.Thank you guys again .

MPSU45/OR NSDU45 DARLINGTON TRANSISTOR

Be Warned, it is a Darlington and can not be checked as a regular Bipolar.

Just pop in a new one.

Thank you homefire but I made a simple test circuit with a 9volt battery,led,switch,470ohm resistor,10k resistor and found that it was working properly.You can get all the details from.http://www.nteinc.com/specs/200to299pdf/nte272.pdf if you can not get the file straight up go to the website and look up the cross reference on transistors there you can get a file on the substitute transistor with all the details.Also this page will show a lot of very good info on testing and details on transistors.http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/tran.htm

Thank you for your quick response now I got the right wiring.That's amazing close ups,what are you using Gold dredge to get such a good quality focus I can almost check your NSDU45 transistor from here AUSTRALIA .Practical way is from the Emitter to Collector is high resistance both ways (by changing polarity)and from Base to Emitter and Collector depending on the NPN or PNP of the transistor is low resistance.Yes now by your photos starting from wire in plug RED(+) being number 1 and BROWN(+) number 2 then NIL on number 3 then BLACK(- )number 4 and ORANGE(-) number 5 and NIL for number 6.We have(1) Red+ and (4) Black give you 36volts for the circuit and (2)Brown+ and (5) Orange- give you 9volts for the sound and that's what the schematics say.But make sure you put the plug back the way you have it.Because you can plug the other way and get 9volts for the sound but the polarity will be wrong.I'm checking mine a friend gave me and all the transistors give o.k checks diodes the same .Even now that thanks to homefire for the schematics. The three voltage check points the 15volts the 7.5volts and 6.2volts across the diode all check o.k.I Wish there was more.Going to the I.C's but they are very tedious to remove(and tip I put I.C sockets good machine ones for a $1 when I remove them so you can change them after with out having to solder any more) and only have one LM358 and CA3290 and MC14011 and the one mounted on the small circuit board CA3160 that has the hard gel all over the little board.Maybe it's bad luck and I'll find the culprit last,if anyone has any ideas who is the culprit this one is giving me a hard time and the only thing working is the battery 1 and 2 check.THANK YOU GOLD DREDGER FOR YOUR PHOTOS AND HOMEFIRE FOR THE SCHEMATICS.

What A Hoot!

My Garrett S3 sound just took a ****. I was trying to replace the head phone jack and shorted it out.

There is only three componits that are comon.

NSDU-45, 2n3906 and the LM358.

The replacement transistor is listed at $45.00... Original is unavailbel and needs to be subbed. But!

I think the one that did the TIts up is a NSDU-45

NSDU-45 on replacement can be replaced by NTE-272. $45.00..

OR you can get it from this guy for $2.75

Thanks for the link. I hope this part fixes my Garret it sure would be cool to get this classic back in working order.
I also found this link and they have lots of garret parts including the NSDU 45 for $2.00 at the bottom of the page. But they are in Australia.

Ok here is the pics of the bottom and top of the power supply and plugs with the board sitting as it would be plugged into the detector. Hope this helps you out.

Hi,
I will pop it open tonight and see if I can get you some clear pics of the power plug for you. I will check the transistor NSDU45 and replace it to see it I get my sound back. It is still dead. I have not been able to sort it out.
