I don't understand how the 79l05 is getting hot if it's only drawing 3.4mA.

    • It's very strange to me too, I tried to remove all the chips from the board and it heats up only when the pic18f4520 is turned on, if I turn it off, 79l05 doesn't heat up at all, but considering the current that passes through the 79l05 3.4ma, it's most likely a bad stabilizer assembly from China. Otherwise, the detector works great in both pulse and hybrid mode and the discrimination is excellent. I was only worried about the current consumption from the 180ma battery is that normal for this detector?

      • To be honest, I cannot remember the actual level of current consumption.
However, it could quite easily be even higher then 180mA depending on the TX pulse width.
The TX pulse width can be adjusted from 10μs to 180μs. The default value is 150μs.
You should get at least 10 hours of detecting time from a 2500mAh battery pack.

        • Bonjour à tous,
It was while browsing the Amazon site that I discovered this project.
I ordered the book and .... after years of absence from this forum, I plunged back into the world of metal detectors.
Waiting to receive the circuit board, I couldn’t resist testing the Arduino version. Finding the 1.3" display a bit small, I had a 2.42" OLED that slept in a drawer, a little more expensive but so much more comfortable.

Congratulation for this achievement and the adaptation of the code on the Arduino IDE.

Very good, I look forward to your experience with the project.

            • It’s your work that is superb, Georges!

In a first step, I will fill the printed circuit board according to your description, with a Pic and the original firmware,
testing its functionality and performance with various coils, homemade of course....

Afterwards, I would like to retrieve the SPI port of the Arduino (pins 12 and 13), in order to connect a TFT display,
and if I am able to adapt the use of the Timers, maybe replace the Nano board with a Teensy.

PS : Thank you very much for the Junior Member qualification ! because for a few years already, I have been classified rather in the Senior II or III categories )
