Damping resistor placement is wrong. Think about it.

But 5cm distance between coil and shield is too much!!!
    Maybe Sido means 5mm!!!!
At my coils for TDI i put 3 layer of wrap and after it the shield with scotch-24and the coils works fine at 10us.

    Sorry Geo

    5mm

    Hello Geo.

Let me try. I think what Sido meant, is to wrap ~two layers of spiral wrap (enough to total ~5mm in thickness) around the coil windings. Then you apply your shielding material. Spiral wrap acts as a spacer to force separation between the coil windings and shield material, lowering shield-to-coil capacitance.

Polyester spiral wrap is inexpensive, and has reasonably low Dielectric Constant. Teflon spiral wrap is best, having the lowest DC. But Teflon will cost you some $$.

I used two layers of 3/16" diameter wrap and that was not terribly bad but it could have been better. If I had used 1/8" diameter spiral wrap for inside layer and covered that with 1/4" wrap, I think that would have been best.

Then you apply your favorite shield material on the outside.

    I hope that helps.

edit: Note that I did not wind the coil I mentioned for a SD2000 so I can't describe how good it would work for that.

If your going to use this detector on low mineralised soil, then you may get away with 1.0 ohm resistance.
Keep Inductance the same at 300uh.

Like WM6 said the diameter is not that important, but in saying this, if you are designing a coil (Mono) of say larger than 50cm then try to use the same coil data of 300uh and 0.4 ohms. Keep coil/cable capacitance as low as possible.

The larger the coil the more problems you may have in the frontend amp. Use DD coil for larger diameters for medium to high mineralised soils.........The TX driver might not like out of spec coil design and may harm the TX Mosfet or associated nearby parts.

Generally Litz wire would be ideal but i think you could use Teflon multistrand wire and achieve a standard (mono) size coil 20-30cm, which will work ok.
You will have to shield the coil for any environment. Do not avoid this..........Space the shield at least 5cm's from coil bundle to lower parasistic capacitance. Use high quality, low capacitance and shortest length coil cable for your needs.

If all else fails, try to get yourself a genuine ML Coil if possible.

    Cheers Sid

I don't know if Zed is still regularly here on forum to help you with his coil diameter data. Another very experienced member in this matter is Mechanic, hope he will join this discussion to help you.

But I think coil diameter is not of much importance, you can use diameter with the same data (L, R) from say 20cm to 30cm of coil diameter.

Regarding coil thickness: if you decide to unshielded coil thickness is not of much important on other hand if your goal is shielded coil and as low as possible time constant, then thickness of coil is determined by distance between coil windings and shielding, which have to be say 5mm or more. If I understand what you mean with "coil thickness".

You have mono coil and connection should be simple from two point as on picture. G line is internal and lead to front-end receive part. If you use shielding connect it to GND (cable shielding too).

As for pdf not needed since there are films here . and can help any changes here in the forum
