in my case i got better sensitivity (25mm copper coin detcected at 38cm in air) with 27cm coil.

SMW v 2.0
The largest range on the coin is 12cm, on a larger object up to 15cm. and without discrimination, and I tried all the steamed transistors and changing IC circuits, only that my PCB is something wrong.

my detection range is not good. 20mm copper coin just 25 cm with descrimination. also there is critical point in frequency potentiometer . if you adjust it slowly to get point where the audio becomes softer without cracks.
i think i will try with 555 version i hope i get some improvement.

My SMV 2.0 still has a low range of detection, discrimination is excellent.
