having made all 3 , the Barracuda and the geotech revised version (which is better) and the Surf PI 1.2, I found the Barr has a more solid tone on targets then the surfpi, meaning at 10inch the beep is a beep with the barr, and the surf pi is more of a loud whisper, but still very detectable tone, however the advantage of the Surf, its easier to make a water tight unit, Both do the job and are great beginner projects, but I have found it much easier to properly tune and set up the Surf pi. With that being said im by no means a metal detectors circuit guru! there might be better info about the actual circuitry ( oscillation, preamps .........) from the real experts here.

The Geotech Baracuda is an updated version of the original Baracuda, and fixes a number of design and reliability issues. The sensitivity is pretty good, and there's a Build Document to guide you through the build process.Originally posted by nonkapo View PostGood afternoon all. May i ask which are the main advantages/disadvantages if any of the Barracuda over Surf PI considering the similarity of the design? I read few opinions here that the Barracuda is better, thats why i'm curious. Thanks.
The Surf-PI is a well proven design, and the "longboard" PCB allows it to be easily constructed in a watertight enclosure. However, there is no Build Document, and several begineers have run into problems getting a working detector. Overall, the Surf-PI is a better basic design than the Baracuda, even though it may be slightly less sensitive.
Both designs use the TX oscillator to generate the audio signal, and both use a single-stage preamp. They are both very good detectors for the beach. If you want a design that is more sensitive to smaller low conductivity items, then look at the MiniPulse Plus (MPP) as this has dual-stage preamp, a separate audio oscillator, and a comprehensive Build Document. However, be aware that the latest version (REV-E) will require access to an oscilloscope to set up the detector correctly.

Thanks, that answer all my questions. I've seen Barracuda B version board for sale and asking my self is it worth with the Surf PI already close to completion to buy that as a next project. Your advice for minipulse is noted, but i think i rather go for Delta pulse than that cause at the moment i need depth for a bit larger items and generally not so interested for coins and so on. Hope that's not too complicated either, but for sure may also need osciloscope.

My advice is to build all of them and have fun along the way. After which you will become expert in pi detectors. You must have oscilloscope, otherwise you are like blind man at a market in Kandahar. Mini pulse is very good. The revision E would benefit from upgraded vco. Special attention must go into coil construction. This is a big contributor to performance of all detectors, along with proper shielding. Delta pulse is very good also.

IS the Delta a PI or a VLF, I noticed on the boards KT was selling a while back it had pots for disc and ground balance. my limited understanding was that PI couldn't do ground balance.Originally posted by dbanner View PostMy advice is to build all of them and have fun along the way. Delta is PI. i changed especcialy all pots' names just bulgarian names was only unright translation from german.
for example, what is NOISE on a pot? thats not given understanding.
yes, DISC but cut-off. disc between small and big. in russian OTSECHKA, but i can not write it just cause you are not russian speaking.
i also can not write FIRST SAMPLE DELAY because*....
ALL MY PROJECTS DROPPED ON LOWLEVEL OF GENERAL UNDERSTANDING, ON LEVEL OF A KITCHEN WIFE.
*PS. because my name is not Eric Foster or Carl M.

Thanks. I like your asociations:-). I only hope the PC version sound card based osciloscope will do the job as that's the only one i can afford at the moment.Originally posted by dbanner View PostMy advice is to build all of them and have fun along the way. Hi Porkluvr, I know this post of yours is from 2013 , 5 years ago but it stuck with me, here in Australia (Oz) we would pronounce that word barracuda as its supposed to be pronounced in Queens English, and the U sorta sounds like OO however 3 weeks ago I was on a cruise ship the Pacific Aria, and on the satellite tv channel an advert came on from a company called Barracuda, and they had a most unusual pronunciation of "cuda" , its really hard to put a sound it into words , but if you think of wooden Pool or Snooker Billiard Cues, and say, "Barra cue da" with the accent on the cue, it sounded odd , it was certainly not the way I would pronounce it, ah the silly things you think of on a cruise ship knocking back a few drinksOriginally posted by porkluvr View PostMost places in US pronounce the first syllable of barracuda like "BEAR" as in "grizzly bear".
People from the deep south (Alabama, Mississippi, etc.) they might say "BAR" as in, " Let's go git sum dranks at the bar".
Or they might say "'cuda", or maybe say "bar'cuda".
It is way too late for me to have written anything. Seriously.
