I had a look at this- at w/e to see if having a 2 tone board would enable the user to open the disc towards all metal and get the extra sens at depth.

But it was clear that in order for the 2 tones to work the Disc must be set as normal and as a consequence there will be no extra depth for the user.

Yes that is right, with 2tone depth is the same, mainly benefit of this is the fact that is very helpfull to identify iron stuff. But if You are talking about that when put higher position of discrimination pot. we get worst deph. I think it can be solved by adding higher value to R57, offcourse then discrimination at "0" will be eliminating iron stuf, or even alu foil etc. but range should not to drop down-i think. sory for my english

I really like what you did there with that coil shell.

Strengthening ribs,
foam infill for lower epoxy flood,
great wire e screen (not continuous - so no loops)
carbon / graphite

If I was wearing a hat - I would take if off to you sir.

Actuall, one minor point I made one like this, I needed to add graphite epoxy over the exposed coil to complete the e shield - then, it gound balanced better, and was massively quieter in the wet grass.

Thanks, it`s not my first and i tried to do my best Please don`t call me a sir, I`m Rafal or reiv as You want. With this coil I have no problem at wett gras, high gras, bush, etc even 2 tone works ok on weet grass. I make my shield from mixing pure graphite with varnish, like satdaveuk wrote, with 1.5k per cm resis, and both covers are shielded. On top of that cabel i made by my self too.

Nice job on the coil! Concentrics work great with this project don't you think? Also your coil data looks very good, much like I would expect. If you can get your hands on some spray graphite lube the shielding process can be a bit easier.

Hi everybody, I presents data for new type of coil to IDX. This one works reeealy great, for example small 15mm diameter coin burried in ground is clearly see at 28cm.. wchich is for me awesome result, discrimination is sharp like a razor . I get weight about 350g.

Thanks Guys. Yes Don You are right concentrics works really well with idx, especially this eliptical (my first big c.coil to idx wasn`t soe good..-but we all learns by mistakes). I never use graphite spray, some time my fried used it and he had problems with grass and his coil gives signal even to clear ground, when he changed shield it stops. Graphit mix is problematic to make, but it works well and it`s veery cheap

Graphite is good, I use thin epoxy and graphite - it does not flow great but with patience you get potting and screening in the one step.

Looking for more depth on my IDX.

I get a full 2 extra inches just opening the Disc - as all machines like this.

With the 2 tone idea you still require the Disc set up so plus gives target tone and minus gives Fe tone - - But no extra depth.


Scoped the IDX disc and geb ch at the comparator stage input with Disc right open so Fe beeps. But now full depth possible.

I had scope in XY and was waving targets and Iron - I couldnt reliably segregate the screen trails to visually disc the results...

I pushed the ADD button on my Hameg 20MHz and waved all of the targets and Iron again, this time I could reliably see a pattern for all of the roman and post medieval copper alloy, Iron age silver alloy, phoshor bronze versus steel, and Iron.


Im sure this would kick about a bit in soil, but I was encouraged by this, the angle of the trace in graticule squares (height x width on the diagonal) was Fe 4x3 and alloys 4x2
large alloy 4x1

Next headache is getting a way to resolve what I see on bench into - Dig or not in the field, dont need numerical result - ideally beep for dig - thats it.

Undoubtedly a great design. Super product.


We all require different things, I require - No display, no range of tones.


Beep for dig of non ferrous - thats it - with the Disc fully open - Max depth.
